NOVEMBER 2019 COMMUNIQUE

Back from Kenya – positive news all around on our projects. The year-over-year transformation at Olympic Primary School is stunning – thanks to your strong support.

Here is how these precious $$$ have been used to improve the learning environment of the 4,700 young students at Olympic:

A. 58 new school desks were built and delivered. When will we have enough??? NEVER! We accept desk orders all year-round.

B. 4 classrooms were retrofitted with new terrazzo floors – no more gaping holes for these 400+ young students. The before / after pictures speak volumes!
Furthermore, 12 parents were gainfully employed and learned new skills to complete this project – a win/win for all!

C. 7 classrooms were given a much needed make-over: new ceilings, new paint job and new teaching boards. A dream come true for the teachers!

D. We completed a pilot project in 1 classroom converting the traditional fluorescent lights to LED lighting. What a remarkable difference of brightness in the classroom. Just 44 more classrooms to go!!

E. We purchased 90 plastic chairs for the school’s use when they host parent meetings.

GOODFELLOW SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM UPDATE:

A. 3 more students graduated from our 4-year high school scholarship, thanks to their generous sponsors. Big hugs to Ron & Jane Armstrong and Roger & Shallee Gaudet for making these kids’ education dreams come true! We now have an alumni group of 43 students who graduated high school under the care of their sponsors.

B. We are sending 29 students to camp on 24th November – one week outside of the slums – one week filled with activities, sports, seminars, music. This is the highlight of their year!

C. We handed out 22 academic awards throughout the year to the students who ranked in the top 10 of their group. Way to go!

D. We will have 5 new students joining the scholarship program in January, again thanks to wonderful sponsors.

E. We completed several repairs and upgrades to the 8 computers that are set up for the exclusive use of our scholarship students.

SPECIAL MENTION:

Since 2008, Gamewatchers Safaris have been donating a safari in Kenya at their exclusive Porini Camps to help boost the funds raised at the RGI tournament and silent auction. This year, they donated 2 safaris – the hottest ticket items during the evening event!
The cash collected from the safaris goes entirely towards the Olympic School projects. This extra boost has allowed us to accelerate the pace of our improvement projects at the school, and the impact is simply amazing!

A huge THANK YOU to Jake Grieves-Cooke, founder and Chairman of Gamewatchers, and to Mohanjeet Brar, Managing Director, for their incredible show of support towards our work. Since we are also strong believers in their conservancy initiatives in Kenya, we expressed our gratitude through a donation to their work in the wild. Asante sana!
